چکیده

A high-~rforman~e liquid chromato~aphy method was used for the deter~ation of the eggshell pigment constituent. Using this method, the content proto~rphyrin IX in seven bird species was quantified. It was found that this compound is most abundant in the eggs of the blackbird (65.55 nmol per egg), but when the amount is related to the eggshell mass, then the greatest amount is in the egg of the yellowhammer (301.0 pmol/mg eggshell), while lowest values were found in the eggs of the swift (0.59 nmol); dunnock egg shells also contained bitiverdin (10.25 nmol). Eggs of the red-backed shrike show a high v~ab~ty of ~~hy~n content (9.40 t_ 6.27 nmol; range 1.03-20.61 nmol per egg). The high intra-species variability of the porphyrin content is likely to reflect physiological influences, e.g. order of egg laying and nesting conditions rather than the effect of the environment.

Changes in pigment, spectral transmission and element content of pink chicken eggshells with different pigment intensity during incubation.

Objective. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in pigment, spectral transmission and element content of chicken eggshells with different intensities of pink pigment during the incubation period. We also investigated the effects of the region (small pole, equator and large pole) and pink pigment intensity of the chicken eggshell on the percent transmission of light passing thr...

Variability in Avian Eggshell Colour: A Comparative Study of Museum Eggshells

BACKGROUND The exceptional diversity of coloration found in avian eggshells has long fascinated biologists and inspired a broad range of adaptive hypotheses to explain its evolution. Three main impediments to understanding the variability of eggshell appearance are: (1) the reliable quantification of the variation in eggshell colours; (2) its perception by birds themselves, and (3) its relation...

Blue-green eggshell coloration reflects yolk antioxidant content in spotless starlings Sturnus unicolor

The hypothesis that eggshell colouration is a sexually selected trait of female birds is based on the fact that biliverdin, the pigment responsible for blue-green colours of the eggshell, is a potent antioxidant and that only females with high antioxidant capacity can deposit higher concentrations of biliverdin as eggshell pigment. Antioxidants (e.g. carotenoids, vitamins) are also abundant in ...

Eggshell pigment composition covaries with phylogeny but not with life history or with nesting ecology traits of British passerines

No single hypothesis is likely to explain the diversity in eggshell coloration and patterning across birds, suggesting that eggshell appearance is most likely to have evolved to fulfill many nonexclusive functions. By controlling for nonindependent phylogenetic associations between related species, we describe this diversity using museum eggshells of 71 British breeding passerine species to exa...
